Yes, the free (trial) versions of avast! Internet Security can be trusted. I have it installed, and it works as it should. However, the trial only gives you 30 days of use to get to know the application and decide if you want to purchase it. After this period, all the functions will stop working, and you'll have to buy the software in order to unlock them.
To configure the application, bring its window foreground using the tray icon and click on the Firewall on the main screen. You can then define, block, unblock and manage the firewall using the menu on the left side.
I purchased the full version but the firewall does not work. The icon at the bottom of the screen says that I am not fully protected. Why is this and what will I need to do to correct the problem? I liked the free version better, I never had any problems with it.

avast! Internet Security features ways to activate the modules easily. Just go to the Security section and the access firewall. Click on the FIX or Start Module and the firewall should start. If you still encounter application, try to re-install the application. It may take a while but it should work flawlessly.
You can use Avast Un-installation utility available from the official website or you can try using Revo Uninstaller. Even if it can't uninstall the application normally, it will force it to uninstall by wiping out all traces of its presence from the system.
After that, try running AdwCleaner to make sure that there are no leftover rogue registry keys or toolbars in your system.
